Tattoos
So, got a Tattoo and finding it difficult to get it removed? Not an issue, here you will learn about how to remove different types of tattoos safely and effectively while understanding their pros n cons.
People of present time have different perspective of getting a tattoo done for them. Whether it serves as a mark of status, trend, pledges of love, protection, symbol of devotion towards religion or spirituality, decorations for bravery, sensual lures and talismans etc., it is taking up the current rage. But along with tattoo making, a new vogue that has come across is of tattoo removal. There could be any reason for this, as a person may feel the impact or symbolism of tattoos is inadequate.
Two types of tattoos are there
Amature Tattoo: Tattoo with Black ink
- Tattoos with Black ink
- Not very deeply penetrated into the skin
- Easy to remove. In just 1 to 2 sittings
Professional Tattoo
- Colored tattoo with black, green, red or other dark color
- Deeply penetrated into the skin
- Not very easy to remove. Need 4-8 sittings for better results with lasers
- For fast results we need surgical intervention with derma abrasion and skin grafting
- Laser toning & carbon blasting may further required to improve the texture of the skin after the treatment
Amateur and Professional Tattoos
There is a clear difference between a professional tattoo and an amateur tattoo. Professional tattoos are regulated with specialized tattoo guns that infuse the ink into the dermal layer of the skin. It is a Colored tattoo with black, green, red or other dark colors.
The amateur tattoos are only in black ink and commonly done with a single needle and do not generally break across the epidermis layer, which is the outermost layer of your skin. Amateur tattoos are likely to look hazy and fade away quickly. They are also more prone to infections. Infections can also occur at a professional tattoo parlor, but since these are largely administered with safety standards and quality you tend to be at less risk.
Tattoo Removal
The success of tattoo removal mainly depends on the tattoo itself. The colors used and the intensity of depth the ink is embedded in the skin are the two major considerations. The main difference between an amateur tattoo and a professional tattoo is the number of colors used. It means that an amateur tattoo is often created using a single color whereas a professional tattoo consists of different colors.
Professional tattoos perforate deeper into the skin in even distribution, which makes it easier for removal. The level of penetration in a professional tattoo is uniform beneath the surface of the skin as opposed to an amateur tattoo which is penetrated at varying depths. However, professional tattoos are also more drenched with ink, which makes it a substantial challenge. A professional tattoo is always designed by a trained tattoo artist at a tattoo parlor or a salon.
Amateur tattoos are most commonly applied with a free flowing hand, that does not allow the ink to settle at uniform level, which makes for a significant challenge in removing, but on a whole they are not much complex to remove. An amateur tattoo can be performed by someone, at home, using a needle and a bottle of India color pigment ink.
Permanent Tattoo removal Procedure
Permanent tattoo removal by Laser technique functions by breaking up the pigment colors in the tattoo with a high frequency wavelength of the light beam. Black tattoo pigment saturates all wavelengths of lasers optimally. Thus black tattoo ink is the easiest color to remove and treat with the laser technique. Other colors like red, blue, brown, green, purple pigments etc can only be removed by specific lasers based upon the pigment color of the tattoo.
The ideal method to remove a permanent tattoo is with Q-switched, or quality-switched, lasers, which have become extensively used in the past ten years. The ray of light finds for contrast between skin color and tattoo color pigment and pulses aims deeply on the skin to split the ink down into fragments small enough for the body to soak.
The number of sessions needed for removal procedure will depend on the size, color, depth, location and age of the tattoo.
All About Tattoo Removal
Tattoos are unique ways of expressing oneself, one’s liking, thoughts and feelings. From symbols to people’s names and faces, each tattoo has a significance in life. People do tattoos for various reasons. While some casually do it out of a desire, others showcase themselves through their decorative body art. However, certain situations like a career in defense or military, air hostess, civil service and administration doesn’t allow tattoos. This is when the very thought of removing those unique body painting comes to people’s mind.
Modern tattoo removal processes are one of a kind and are known for its painless and effortless procedures. These are the most convenient ways of removing tattoos along with its markings, from the skin. The contemporary tattoo removal surgeries consist of laser as well as non-laser treatments.
Permanent Tattoo Removal/Surgery/Laser & Non-laser Tattoo Removal Treatments
Following are the permanent tattoo removal treatments offered:
Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion followed by Melanocyte Treatment
Skin Grafting Technique
Excision
Q Switch
CO2 fractional laser
Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion is an exfoliation procedure in which the outer skin layer is eliminated. Besides removing tattoos, this technique is also useful for treating acne, dark spots, wrinkles, age-related marks, uneven skin tone and other similar issues. At Care Well Medical Centre, Dermabrasion techniques are performed under the able supervision of Dr. Sandeep Bhasin and yields productive results.
In this process, tattoos are removed by rasping away the top layer of skin. As a result, the tattoo pigments also get aloof. At first, surgeons deliver local anesthesia, which keeps the skin numb. After this, they use a device, called dermatome, which scraps away the skin layers along with the dermis- where the ink of the tattoo is present.
Although it is safe and protected, those with bleeding disorders and keloid scars must never avail this treatment. Dermabrasion works best for smaller size tattoos; however not a right choice for larger designs and patterns.
After the procedure, skin turns red. It might also get swollen and sore. Medical professionals immediately bandage it and recommends to keep it covered under sunlight and restrict use of cosmetic products. In such condition, it may take anything between few weeks to couple of months to recover and heal completely.
Dermabrasion followed by Melanocyte Treatment
When Dermabrasion is followed by Melanocyte Treatment , tattoo starts getting removed, at a cellular level. Post Dermabrasion, Melanocytes and Keratinocytes are implanted, through surgeries on those, who have been through Vitiligo and Tattoo Removal. More than 90% of patients have benefited from the two-fold treatment and has undergone phototherapy to create and influence new cells and pigments within the tattooed area.
Skin Grafting Technique
The procedure involves taking new skin from other body parts, mainly underarms and thighs; and placing it in the body art skin. In this procedure, wound healing and application of new skin happens simultaneously. It is most suitable for large tattoo designs. At Care Well Medical Centre, two kinds of skin grafting are conducted, under the guidance of Dr. Sandeep Bhasin. In both grafting techniques, local anesthesia is provided. Skin is removed from the donor site and replaced at the transplant site. It is then joined through stitches and staples. Finally, the area is bandaged to prevent physical injuries and infections.
Grafting procedures at Care Well Medical Center is done under the expert guidance of Dr. Sandeep Bhasin. There are two types of Skin Grafting Procedures:
Split Level Thickness Grafts
The dermis and epidermis are taken away, in this procedure. New skin from the donor site is grafted to the tattooed region. These grafts cover larger skin and therefore are primarily used to cover substantial portions of tattoo removal skin. After split-level thickness grafting, skin gets a smoother appearance. However, since it cannot grow or merge with existing skin, it must be followed with further skin grafting procedures.
Post skin grafting, there will be two scars- one at the donor region and the other at the transplant region. Skin grafts being extremely weak, demand efficient post-treatment care and maintenance. The grafting dressings must be kept in place, as per surgeon’s advice. Intense workouts and physical activities should be avoided until the stitches are removed and joints melt. Wounds should be kept in a dry state. People must avoid scratching their wounds, since it can remove and infect grafts.
Full Thickness Grafts
It works at the muscle and cellular level and removes new skin from the donor site. The top two skin layers are also eliminated in this surgical process. The full thickness grafts grows with old skin and does not require further surgeries.
Excision
It is an ideal process for removing smaller tattoos. Dermatologists and surgeons perform a surgery after injecting local anesthesia, after which, skin is taken away, along with the tattoo and the ink, right from the dermis. After this, skin is rejoined through stitches and staples. This process might require more than one session, for complete tattoo removal.
With its high precision, it is most effective for treating smaller tattoos. After excision, skin might get discolored, develop scars and infection. After surgery, the wounded skin must be kept away from direct sunlight. People can also apply moisturizing cream to escape scar marks. In some cases, surgeons also recommend applying antibiotics and cold packs.
All About Laser Tattoo Removal
The laser techniques are of modern origin and guarantee good results at the end of surgeries. These are non-surgical ways of removing unwanted tattoos from any part of body. Care Well Medical Centre conducts three laser treatments for eliminating tattoos.
Laser technique is not painful, but may feel slightly inconvenient, but most people do not need an anesthesia. Protective eyewear is applied during the procedure. The dermatologist will first test the skin’s reaction to the laser light to figure out the most appropriate energy and intensity for the treatment. Tattoos that are smaller in size will require less number of pulses while bigger ones will require more for their removal remove. Subsequent sittings (between 6-10) are required to completely remove a permanent tattoo. After multiple sessions, the tattoo would get lighter and finally cleared completely.
Q switch Laser
Laser tattoo removal has been a clinically proven technique to remove tattoos. These lasers create pulses of beam, which last for a billionth of second and crushes down ink pigments. On focusing the laser at the tattooed skin, the ink particles lying in the dermis layer, absorb laser light without touching nearby skin. The light so absorbed, is converted into heat energy, which breaks the ink particles. Within few days, the shattered ink is gradually taken away by the body. There are two lasers, of different wavelength- 532nm and 1064nm.
- Laser with wavelength of 1064 nm is used to remove black tattoos
- For coloured tattoos 532 nm of wavelength is used
Since the beam pulse lasts for small duration, surrounding areas aren’t affected. Also, these lasers are capable of eliminating both light and dark tattoos, of all sizes. The best laser equipment for removing tattoos are there at Care Well Medical Centre.
Q Switch Lasers have certain fallings. Multiple number of sittings are required for complete tattoo removal. This procedure consumes substantial amount of time and after the treatment, residual pigmentation or ghost image remains on the skin.
Laser Toning
The laser toning method is a procedure that penetrates deep into the dermis layer and works by heating only the upper dermis, very near to the surface of the skin, for the most noticeable results. read more...

R 20 Technique
This process takes only 20 minutes, which is why, the name R 20 Technique. One sitting of this treatment is further divided into four sessions, with 20 minutes waiting time between each session, on the same day. With single pass of laser light, nitrogen bubbles are formed at the top layer of the skin, where the tattoo designs are spotted. As light passes through the skin layers, the tattoo ink absorbs it and gradually gets removed from skin. Colorful tattoos and fluorescent ink are difficult to remove. Black tattoo ink, on the contrary, is capable of absorbing light, of all wavelengths and therefore gets eliminated, easily.
For large tattoo designs, it takes around 8 to 10 sessions, which means 8 to 10 months. On an average, a single session is done once a month.
The R20 procedure does not affect surrounding skin. Although, some candidates experience mild burning sensation during the tattoo removal process. In these cases, surgeons apply anti-bacterial ointments and dresses the wound. Some also have redness on their skin, which fades away with time. Post-R20, direct exposure to sunlight as well as skin products and cosmetics should be avoided. Treated skin must be applied with petroleum jelly or Vaseline, and ointments, for at least few days to some weeks, as advised by medical professionals. The wound should be covered with a bandage and skin must be treated with utmost care and protection, since it’s delicate, soon after treatment. If scars are visible, it slowly goes away within few days.
Pros of the Procedure
Being a completely non-surgical procedure, there is no pain and no recover time. Patients can get back to normal course of life, soon after treatment.
- Non-surgical procedure

Cons of Q-switch Lasers are:
- Multiple sessions are required for complete removal
- It is Time Consuming
- Ghost Image or residual pigmentation remains there
Post Procedure Care
Patients can observe redness after the treatment, but it would fade away quickly. Sunlight and skin products should be avoided. Vaseline or Petroleum jelly can be applied for a few days to weeks. It is also advised to keep the wound wrapped in bandages. Treat your skin very gently, the scars shall fade in due time. Application of ointment needs to be carried out on the recommendation of the physician.
Co2 Fractional Lasers
Also known as pixilated lasers, the Co2 Fractional Lasers have the longest wavelength and is mostly used on dark skin types. In this, a fractional laser enters deep into the body by pixelating and dividing into multiple light shafts. The laser then vaporizes old skin, replaces it with new skin and shrinks collagen. As a result, old skin gets repaired and immediate results are observed. However, complete results are viewed, only after 4-6 months. The best advantage of this treatment is that patients hardly experience any pain or discomfort and removes tattoo flawlessly.
