Rhinoplasty: Why do it at all?
The nasal cavity or the nose consists of various parts such as the Nasal Bone, Upper Lateral Cartilage, Lower Lateral Cartilage, and the Dorsal Nasal Septum. Men and Women have different nasal aesthetics wherein various parameters are considered such as various angles, length, the nostrils, etc.
A Rhinoplastic procedure generally consists of complete modification of nasal cartridges, bone modifications, tissue additions, and the works! Rhinoplasty is done for two principal reasons Cosmetic and Function. Some of the cosmetic abnormalities corrected at Care Well Medical Centre include the nasal tip not being aesthetic or drooping, nasal hump correction, correction of crooked& pointed nose, wide nostrils, Refining of Nose Tip, Nose Elevation,Narrow Nose Correction, etc.
The Functional anomalies would include a deviated septum, problems with Nasal Valves, etc. This ingenious reconstruction can modify nose size to balance the facial structure, change nose width at the bridge, change nose profile with depressions and humps, change large, upturned and wide nasal structures and asymmetry.
Who is eligible for Rhinoplasty?
- Rhinoplasty can be conducted on an individual above 18 years of age.
- The clients should be in good health condition.
- Individuals who desire realistic expectations.
Pre-Surgery Evaluation
One needs to understand and discuss the expectations of this procedure with the surgeon. A Rhinoplasty specialist needs to put forth any limitations in terms of the facial structure to make the surgery easier as well as successful. Pre-Surgery photographs of the face and nose are taken, so that they can be analysed properly.
The surgical procedure mostly includes the patient to be checked by the anaesthesiologist for vital functions as well as no liquids and foods should be consumed 6 hours prior to the surgery. Individuals who smoke need to stop smoking as it causes healing problems post-surgery. Illnesses, be it terminal or temporary should be reported to the surgeon before the procedure.
Happenings during the operation & thereafter
The surgery may take several hours depending on the complexity of the deformation, during which anaesthesiologists and surgeons monitor vital signs. After the operation, the patient is discharged within 24 hours wherein the nasal cavity is bandaged with Nasal Packing and an External Nasal Splint, the nasal packing is generally removed within a week’s time whereas the external splint is removed after 3 weeks.
Light meals should be taken rather than heavy ones, several visits are required to initiate healing and speedy recovery as the nose is quite tender after surgery, and thus a special spray is given to prevent nasal crusts. Patients cannot sneeze after the packing is removed for about 7-10 days as it can start bleeding in the nasal cavity. Edema after surgery settles down in 3-6 months.
As the healing process takes time, individuals should avoid rigorous sports and other activities.
Rhinoplasty & Modern Techniques
Rhinoplasty is done by two techniques; Open Technique & Closed Technique
The open technique is a preferred procedure for cosmetic surgery as they are precise, the grafting can be done in the correct position, and a better assessment of the nasal problem can be done. Rhinoplasty at Care Well Medical Centre is done with state-of-the-art techniques to ensure cosmetic and functional results.
The latest techniques include Reduction Rhinoplasty for Dorsal Hump, Overhanging nasal tip, Overhanding Columella,Augmentation Rhinoplasty for Depressed nose, Increasing Nasal Length, strengthening ala etc, Tip refinement for Bulbous tip and wide nasal tip, Osteotomy to raise the height of nasal dorsum, narrowing the nasal base and correction of open roof deformity, Hump Reduction for reducing excess hump on dorsum of nose, Cephalic trim, Interdomal and interdomal stiches for narrowing the broad nasal tip, Septoplasty for deviated Nasal septum, & Spreader graft for collapsed internal valves.
Autologous grafts are also used to deliver the best results at economical prices. Other grafts such as Septal Graft, Conchal Grafts, Rib Grafts and Pelvic Grafts are also used in Rhinoplasty.
Implants are not advisable
Implants should never be used for Nose correction as there could be infection or extrusion of implants.
Conclusion
Nevertheless, all successful Rhinoplasty procedures deliver a natural appearance for your face. A strong nasal structure and function improves daily life processes and delivers confidence. Modern Rhinoplasty is incredibly predictable, accurate and effective with the right set of tools and skills.
